Here We Go Steelers, Here We Go

With the New Year comes the potential for great possibilities. Yes, this includes the old standbys – weight loss, financial improvement, increased leisure time… But I’m a realist, and therefore choose to set my hopes on something more likely to happen: A Steelers run to the Super Bowl! What can I say, I’m an ambitious guy. Goals just seem easier to accomplish when they involve no physical or mental effort from the actual goal setter.

Yes, there was only one resolution on my list when the yearly speedometer rolled over to 2009 – “Don’t choke on Bugles while watching the NFL post season.”

If I make it through the current playoffs without hacking up the beloved General Mills snack, it will already be a better year than last. But, I digress.

As a die-hard Pittsburgh fan, it’s only natural that I get ahead of myself and start planning the team’s trip to the big game. So far, so good. The Steelers host the AFC championship this weekend (against Baltimore Ravens). If they win, then it’s off to Tampa.

Deep inside, I know this can only end one of two ways.

The first outcome involves me:

  1. Calling up friends in the ’Burg, with a tear in my eye
  2. Hugging my wife and son (swaddled in a Terrible Towel of course)
  3. Downing a victory Iron City
  4. Reveling in the history-making moment that is six Super Bowl rings

The second outcome is a bit similar, just with a few tweaks. It involves me:

  1. Calling up friends in the ’Burg to console them, and possibly talk a few down
  2. Hugging my wife, who asks me to please not cry in front of our son
  3. Guzzling several Iron City’s – slurping up the watered-down taste of defeat
  4. Reveling in the history-making moment that is six Super Bowl rings — Nintendo Wii style. Yes, my team might not be champs in the real world, but in my Madden 09 virtual haven, the Steelers franchise reigns supreme – at least when I’m sweating up the remote controls. Yes, I have a lot of time on my hands.

This brings me to my overall point. It’s great following a team that’s in the playoffs, Bengals fans!
